§ 3. A reality «The greatest Generation» as a way manipuljativnogo influences in the American political discourse

In public statements of the American politicians often there are political realities, characteristic for a state system of the USA, testifying about historical and a country cultural heritage in various spheres of a life.

A reality - a word naming object (phenomenon) of culture, not having exact conformity in other language. It is an original key to understanding of a historical role of that 65

Or other people. Therefore studying of political realities extremely important for a rational substantiation of the processes occurring today in the world politicians.

In the public statements politicians of the USA frequently address to a reality «Great generation» (The Greatest Generation) which assumes generation of the Americans, gone through social and economic crisis of 1930th years, and then taken part in the Second World War. In the American political discourse the given term began to be used after a book exit under the name «The Greatest Generation» in 1998 the American television journalist Volume Brokou became which author.

We had been analysed 8 examples from political statements of Barrack Obamy in which the US president appeals to concept «The Greatest Generation».

«So it was for the greatest generation that conquered fear itself, and liberated a continent from tyranny, and made this country home to untold opportunity and prosperity» (the Site of the White house, Web, 2008).

Barrack Obama believes, that America is obliged by much to generation of their ancestors. In the performance devoted to Day of work, the US president recollects the grandfather, in its image he sees the present spirit of the American people, aspiration to freedom, independence, to prosperity:

«And it was that greatest generation that built America into the greatest force of prosperity and opportunity and freedom that the world has ever known - Americans like my grandfather, who went off to war just boys, then returned home as men, and then they traded in one uniform and set of responsibilities for another» (the Site of the White house, Web, 2010). Barrack Obama underlines equality of Americans before each other as one of basic values of the American nation is the statement «all are equal, all are free».

According to Barrack Obame, the Great generation has released the American continent from threat of distribution of fascism and Great Depression. Thanks to Great generation of the woman have received a vote, and workers had an opportunity to create the organisations.

«That's how the greatest generation defeated Fascism and overcame a Great Depression. That's how women won the right to vote. That's how workers won the right to organise.» (The Site of the White house, Web, 2008).

In a following example the American president underlines such qualities of the people, as courage, diligence. In its opinion, these qualities were showed during the Second World War.

«That is how the greatest generation, my grandfather fighting in Patton's army, my grandmother staying at home with a baby, working on a bomber assembly line, how that greatest generation defeated Hitler and fascism and lifted itself up out of a great depression» (the Site of the White house, Web, 2010). It is interesting to notice, that in the performances, mentioning a role of Great generation in the Second World War, Barrack Obama mentions only Americans.

About a role of other countries and the people during this difficult historical period, in particular the USSR, it is held back.

Thus, it is possible to assume, that if this information will get on eyes to the person with low level of erudition or a little familiar with historic facts it will be perceived by it as an indisputable truth that is how it is to favourably certain subject of political activity.

«The challenge facing the greatest generation of Americans — the generation that had vanquished fascism on the battlefield — was how to contain this threat while extending freedom's frontiers» (the Site of the White house, Web, 2008).

The same tendency we can observe and in the first inaguratsionnoj speeches of Barrack Obamy:

«Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions.

67

They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please »(the Site of the White house, Web, 2009).

Speaking about «earlier generations», the US president mentions Great generation. In the given example of a word "fascism" and "communism" rank, thus, between them the parallel is drawn. The American president speaks about allied forces, but does not specify them. The impression is as a result made, that all burden of the Second World War lays down on shoulders of the American people, and the USSR appears in quality of "auxiliary means».

Instead of gratitude expression to the Soviet people for a general victory in war against fascism, Barrack Obama appeals to Great generation, specifying only on achievements of Americans, reflecting, thus, national exclusiveness of the USA and it «over a role» for world history.

Addressing to congress of veterans in August, 2008, the president Barrack Obama appeals to Great generation, speaking about the American soldiers as about the heroes protecting the country behind its limits:

«Our young men and women in uniform have proven that they are the equal of the Greatest Generation on the battlefield. Now, we must ensure that our brave troops serving abroad today become the backbone of our middle class at home tomorrow. Those who fight to defend America abroad must have the chance to live their dreams at home...» (The Site of the White house, Web, 2008).

So, everything, that is connected with patriotism, soldier's valour and aspiration to protect the native land is reflexion of Great generation. Both previous, and the today's generation is conducted by operations outside of the country, extending freedom and the world, conducting the country to economic prosperity. Achievements of the generation accepting today participation in wars in the Near East, are equated to achievements of Great generation of Americans:

«Your generation, the generation of Afghanistan and Iraq, has met every mission that you ’ ve been given. You ’ ve served tour after tour. You ’ ve earned not just our admiration; you, ve earned your place in American history alongside those greatest generations» (the Site of the White house, Web, 2010).

«And this new generation of troops coming home from Iraq, they’ve earned their place alongside the greatest generation. Just like that greatest generation, they’ve got the skills, they’ve got the training, they’ve got the drive to move America’s economy forward once more» (the Site of the White house, Web, 2010).

So, we had been analysed 8 offers in political performances of Barrack Obamy in which there is a reality «The Greatest Generation». It has been established, that the use of the given reality can serve in a certain contextual environment as the tool for management of public opinion and to imposing to wide weight of the population of sights politically favourable to the president. Referring to Great generation in public statements, subjects of a policy form ideology favourable to them in a society. Hence, one of the major functions of realities in the American political discourse is manipuljativnaja the function shown in speeches of the American president.
