2 Line 2,54 millimetres (10 points) The linear measure is entered since XVIII century. An example: Russian 3 linear (7,62-mm) Mosina S.I.'s rifle of the sample 1891 года1 had the name "tryohlinejka", occurring from calibre of the trunk equal to three lines on 2,54 mm.
3 Inch 25,4 millimetres (10 lines) The linear measure is entered since XVIII century.
4 Vershok 44,38 millimetres (1,75 inches) The word occurs from top in sense «the top extremity something, top, a top.
5 Span

17, 8 centimetres (4 vershoks) It is mentioned in sources since XII century. As a national-household measure it continued to be used up to the XX-th century.
6 Foot 304,8 millimetres (12 inches) In XVIII century during realisation of reforms of Peter I in connection with requirements of the industry and trade existing linear measures have been added by English measures in foot and inch.
3 Elbow 35,6 centimetres (2 spans, 2 vershoks) It is mentioned in literary monuments since XI century. It was equaled to half of English yard. Since XVI century the elbow was gradually superseded by arshin.
4 Arshin 0,71 metre (2 elbows, 4 spans, 16 vershoks) It is legitimised in Russian empire as the basic linear measure «Position about measures and scales» from June, 4th, 1899. Growth of the person and large animals was designated in

Vershoks over two arshin, for small animals - over one arshin.
5 Sazhen 2,133 metres (3 arshins, 12 spans, 48 vershoks) One of the most widespread in Russia and in Russian empire of linear measures.
6 The state

2,16 metres (3 arshins (72 sm) on 16 vershoks). It is approved in 1649 «Cathedral ulozheniem», it is equal to length of 7 English foots (2,1336 metres) on закону1 from October, 11th, 1835.
6 The slanting

2,48 metres Originally the broad shoulders are a distance from tips of fingers of the hand extended upwards to fingers of a foot opposite to it.
7 Verst 1066,8 metres (~ 500 sazhens) The verst size repeatedly varied depending on number sazhen, entering in it, and sazhen sizes.

mezhevaja

2,12 kilometres (1000 sazhens, 2 versts) In XVIII century mezhevye versts were gradually superseded travelling (1,06 km) which in XIX century were established definitively.
9 Mile (German or geographical) 7, 420 kilometres (7 versts) Occurs from a Latin word "milija" - one thousand steps (1/15 degrees of terrestrial equator).
