a situation 1

SITUATION 1: You work in a department of a company. Now you are at the seminar. You need to take some notes but your pen does not write. The head of your department is sitting next to you and might have an extra pen.

You ask him about it. (You work in department of one company. Now you are at a seminar. You need to make some records, and your handle does not write. The chief of your department sits near to you and, probably, it has one more handle. You ask it about it).

Apparently from table 7 which shows use of preparatory strategy by examinees, groups PI and PII in the given situation use expression Could you give me more often... (Tab. 7) see.

Table 7. The language means used by respondents in preparatory strategy

Group Means Frequency
Ak Could I borrow a pen 10 %
May I use/borrow 20 %
Would you happen to... 25 %
Can I borrow 5 %
R ІІ Could you be so polite to give 5 %
Can I borrow 5 %
Would you be so kind to lend 5 %
Couldn't you borrow me 5 %
I was wondering if you could 15 %
Could you give 35 %
РІ May you borrow/lend me... 10 %
Could you give me... 45 %
Can I take/borrow your pen 10 %
Could I have... 10 %

It is dictated by that in Russian speech in the given situation we can tell - you could not give me the handle. Informants from group R ІІ even used a negative design with this modal verb, leaning against the native language - Couldn't you.Здесь we face a vivid example pragmalingvisticheskogo carrying over. It is necessary to notice also, that respondents from group R_ have wrongly used in the answers a verb borrowвместе with a pronoun you.В the given case again native language influence as in Russian we will tell is traced you could not borrow to me. In group Ak answers it is possible to meet only a pronoun of first person Could I borrow. The set example also is the certificate pragmalingvisticheskogo carrying over. Respondents from group R ІІ try to be polite, using such variants of the request as Could you be so polite..., Would you be so kind. . We Will pay attention that in control group on the first place on the use may.Это it is possible to explain a modal verb to that the above-stated situation has official character where the verb mayвполне is pertinent.

Following on rate of the use strategy - inquiry of the information.

It is used in all groups (tab. 8 see). Here it is possible to observe practically homogeneous structure of language means in all groups of examinees. However examinees from group PII have again resorted to pragmalingvisticheskomu to carrying over, wrongly having applied a negative design - Don't you have an extra pen.Попытка will not apply Russian variant of the request At you the spare handle? In English language has turned to a phrase Unless at you there is no spare handle?

Table 8. The language means used by respondents

In strategy of inquiry of the information

Group Means Frequency
Ak Do you have a spare pen 40 %
PII Do you have an extra pen 25 %
Don't you have an extra pen 5 %
PI Will you give me 5 %
Do you have an extra pen 20 %

Among strategy of the basic certificate respondents from group PI have used one more strategy - the direct request - Give me your pen (5 %), having made thus sotsiopragmatichesky carrying over. They used the direct request as it could be made in Russian. However the speech certificate of the request in English language does not assume any direct instructions on performance of actions, that is the imperative use here is simply inadmissible even if to soften with its marker of politeness please as it was made by the respondent.

Among strategy of the auxiliary certificate there is a strategy of a preliminary designation of the request (strategy of the supporting speech certificate in tab. 4 see) to which the informant from group PI has resorted only, having used a phrase - I need your help (5 %). Here the sender followed the mechanism of positive politeness, showing aspiration to cooperation with the addressee.

Stating the request in the first situation, Russian examinees not so it is frequent as American explained the reason of the request. Respondents from group R ІІ have used negative design Don't you have a spare penошибочно, and it has led to value occurrence Unless at you there is no spare handle? Here we face again an example pragmalingvisticheskogo carrying over. In an explanation of the reason of the request Russian informants used only a verb writeво times Present Simple or Present Continuous, for example, does not write/isn't writing (does not write), while the American informants at all do not use this verb, but only such expressions as isn't working, is out of ink, ran out of ink, has no ink, went out (tab. 9 see).

Table 9. The language means used by respondents in strategy of the basis for the request

Group Means Frequency
Unfortunately my pen isn't working 5 %
Ak My pen is out of ink 10 %
Mine ran out of ink 15 %
I left mine 5 %
R ІІ Mine is out of work 5 %
Don't you have a spare pen 5 %
My pen does not write 10 %
My pen has broken 5 %
РІ My pen does not write 15 %
My pen isn't writing 5 %

Groups R_ and R ІІ have used also strategy of elimination of possible objections: R ІІ - I did not mean to bother you (5 %), РІ - I will not be able to take my notes (5 %); and strategy priglushenija values: РІ - for a minute (10 %), R ІІ - for a moment (5 %).
